At least four witnesses saw the man jump from the Putts Bridge into the Chicopee River Tuesday afternoon.
LUDLOW -- State police divers will use high-tech sonar equipment today as they resume the search for the body of a man who jumped into the Chicopee River Tuesday afternoon.
Fire Chief Mark Babineau said members of the State Police Underwater Recovery Unit, aided by Ludlow firefighters, will search the same area of the river today with the sonar equipment.
A least four witnesses saw the man jump off the Putts Bridge at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. A search of the river banks that afternoon and a full day of searching Wednesday failed to yield any trace of the man, who is presumed dead.
“It’s a very difficult area to work in,” Babineau said. “We have steep banks, we have fast water, it’s very cold, there’s ice on the river, it’s treacherous.”
Babineau said police have yet to determine the man’s identity.
State police joined the search yesterday with divers, a team of trained dogs and a helicopter.
Babineau said Springfield firefighters will be on standby Thursday.
