The driver showed no signs of impairment and stopped at the accident scene.

LUDLOW — A 30-year-old man was hit by a car and seriously injured Sunday on West Avenue.

The man was crossing the street at about 6:45 p.m. when he was struck by a car driven by a 57-year-old male near the intersection of Stebbins Street, Ludlow police Sgt. Daniel Valadas said.

“When the officer arrived, the car was on the side of the road and the victim was lying in the road. ... He was conscious but not alert," Valadas said.

The officer immediately treated the victim, who appeared to be suffering from a head injury. Ludlow Fire Department paramedics arrived quickly, treated the pedestrian, then brought him to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he was listed in critical condition, Valadas said.

Police closed the road between Stebbins and Davis streets so investigators from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section can examine the scene. The roads were expected to be re-opened around midnight, Valadas said.

The car was impounded, but no charges were immediately filed against the operator, who stopped at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, Valadas said.

Names of the victim and the driver were not released.
